Do we need a policy on linking to external sites?
This question asked if someone could post a link to an external source that may (or may not) answer the question, i.e. “is there a service/app/tool/etc out there to do X?”
A fairly vigorous discussion ensued, with some people questioning the value of this type of question, many simply stating that they want to see the link and not the question.
With that being said, it seems to me that, as a community, we need a policy that we should only use external links to reference questions/answers that are asked in our own site and not ones that are not. These are answers that are by or are linked to members of our community who are here to help, and also, these are by web apps/services that are either here to help if we encounter them, or are legit tools/apps (like Google Voice).
We should not link to random web apps or use external links to reference questions from other SE sites or mix sites.
It is not clear to me what the benefit of linking to an outside site is, and I don’t believe it is acceptable for everyone to have the ability to reference and quote/copy-paste code from outside sources.

In the beginning of my career as a developer, I got into the habit of putting some external links at the bottom of every question. Since I was a hobbyist, it never occurred to me that such links could be considered link-only answers. And if they were, I would just flag them as spam.
However, over the years, I noticed that much of my time would be spent clicking on links when I wanted to read the question. And when I didn’t want to click on a link, it felt like a wrong solution to the problem to not give any solution.
Thus, I see this discussion as a legitimate question. And in the interest of not wasting people’s time, I think it is valuable to know whether external links are allowed. Personally, I prefer them because then
