First, turn your server off – Now, run sfc /scannow /offbootdir/d. Finally, turn it back on, reboot, and try again. (If it doesn’t boot back up, then your problem is a little bit more than just Windows Activation…. You should look into it – even if you can’t repair the Windows Update Client)….

- Copy the installation files of the new installation of Windows to a USB flash drive or CD
- Boot the Windows 8 computer from the removable medium
- Run the update from the removable medium
- If all goes well, your Windows 8 machine will not prompt you to activate.
Windows 7 product key is also known as product Key for Windows or Windows Registration Key. A Windows 7 product key consists of several components, three of which are:
- The Product ID — the unique 10-digit code used to identify the specific Windows 7 license key. This is displayed on the product key label.
- The Serial Number — the unique 7-digit code (usually last four numbers) which is the last component of the product ID.
- The Rollover Key — a bit-sized code that is used to identify the product key on the hard drive or in the BIOS of the target computer.
