a resurgence of the sacredness of the thiruketheeswaram temple was triggered by the efforts of two women saints. one was the great tamil poetess, sitta, who was born in the temple town of puhar in the north arcot district of tamil nadu. she wrote several hymns to the lord of the temple in the form of a prayer, which were published by her family in the year 1880. the other was thanthi nayanar, ‘the lady saint’, who was born in a vaishnava family and was a devotee of siva. she spent her life in wandering the tamil country and in the beautiful lakes of tiruchirapalli. she too wrote several hymns to the lord of the temple in the form of a prayer. both sitta and thanthi nayanar’s hymns were extensively sung by the tamil hindus of india and sri lanka. they are read in all the sacred temples of tamil nadu. sitta’s poems were later sung to the melody of the thiruketheeswaram temple.
tiruketheeswaram, located on the western coast of sri lanka, is one of the five ancient iswarams, or great siva temples, along the shores of sri lanka: naguleswaram on the north coast, koneswaram on the east coast, thondeswaram in the south, munneswaram on the west coast and here, ketheeswaram, also on the western coast toward jaffna. these five ancient temples were all demolished by portuguese soldiers when they conquered the island in the 16th century. all of them except thondeswaram have been rebuilt by the devout hindus of sri lanka. the very location of tiruketheeswaram was lost; its rediscovery in 1894 was the result of intense efforts by the jaffna tamil community to find and resurrect it. helpful in this effort were the songs of the early tamil saints, including sambandar and sundarar, whose images now adorn two of the temples eight new pillars leading to the main sanctum. thondeswaram, similarly lost, is thought to have been located in the galle area at the southern tip of sri lanka. but little more is known.
thirugnanasambandar, who lived just before the sixteenth century, became the king of thiruvithamcode, but is better known as a great intellectual and poet. the word sambandar means a composer of allegories, and this poet was the first to furnish the people of the country with such artfully arranged tales. he was also the first to associate the quaint, striking pictures of lampal and padalam with the pathetic and tender stories of love. he is no poet, therefore, but a person of mighty eloquence. his best known work is tiruvachagaram– a work that embraces many gems: kaliyugam, thiruvarutheivam, thiruvilaiyattam and tirumurai. these are the four kalaim of the first kalimai mentioned in the first verse of the thiruvaimozhi, the sacred hymn composed by thirumular.
this is the author of the famous tamil song thiruvaasichellam. this song has been sung and sung for centuries by tamil people and brahmans. the argument in the song is that the idols of the deities are at their prayers in the heavens. they are in front of the sun and moon, and so the sun-rays and moon-beams shine upon them. one day, balaji saw the crescent moon and remembered that it is a full moon day. balaji, who is an omniscient god, then saw that his idol was always on an empty stage and the other deities had also been removed. now, some devotees of other deities came and worshipped all the deities again. the idols, placed on an empty stage, and worshiped by the devotees, were seen to shine with the same rays as the moon. the sun is worshiped daily. the temple is decorated with many garlands of flowers. thus, the song reveals that balaji is an omnipresent god, and that sun, moon, saraswati, the other deities and the devotees are all avatars of siva, vishnu, and brahma.
