First-order biomass kinetics was assumed as the key feature of microbial growth on cellobiose. The model determined the initial (k(1st)) and growth rate (k(growth)) constants and the growth yield coefficient (Y(growth)) based on the different initial cellobiose concentration. The k(1st) values were linearly correlated with the amount of glucose released from cellobiose. The k(growth) values ranged from 0.0667 to 0.2567 h(-1) at different initial cellobiose concentrations. The Y(growth) decreased from 0.44 to 0.22 as the initial cellobiose concentration increased from 0.1 to 1.0 g/L.
