the main limitation of mechanical seals is their low reliability. the reliability is usually analyzed by the estimate of the typical life of the seal. in the present paper the authors focused on the actuators (plasticization) capability to increase the seal life. this is not a trivial task because the typical life of a mechanical seal is about few tens of thousands of sealing cycles. the lifetime of the seal is usually evaluated by the number of sealing cycles. this parameter, however, is not indicative of the actual seal reliability. the actual reliability is a function of seal safety and the probability of sealing cycles. during the sealing cycle, the actuator is always exposed to high pressure and temperature, which may cause the plasticizer and/or the seal itself to fail. all of these failures are necessary to have a reliable seal. in this context, the authors focused their efforts in selecting the material that should be the most suitable for this purpose. two materials were selected: metallic springs (inconel) and elastomers. an innova 5400 multidirectional material testing machine was used to test the stress-strain curve of the samples. from this curve, the tensile stress and the yielding point were evaluated. in order to get information about the plasticization capability, the tensile stress at yielding point has been analyzed. the graph in figure 3 shows that, for both materials, the plasticization capability decreases with temperature, being the metallic spring the more suitable for this purpose.
if the size of the external diameter of the sealing faces are equal to or larger than the external diameter of the shaft, the seal will work as a conventional mechanical face seal. if the external diameter of the sealing faces is smaller than the external diameter of the shaft, the seal will work as an inside mechanical face seal. in order to seal the gap between the shaft and the sealing faces, springs are used. the springs need to be installed so that the contact surfaces are placed close to the sealing faces. if the axial distance between the contact surfaces is too large, the springs must be able to provide a high load, which will in turn cause high friction and wear. if the axial distance between the contact surfaces is too small, the springs must be able to compress a large area and provide a relatively low load. in order to improve the performance of the springs, the following conditions must be satisfied: (i) for small axial distance, the springs should be stiff (high modulus of elasticity), (ii) for large axial distance, the springs should be soft (low modulus of elasticity).
