Hani Abu Taih, an engineer, watches Yusuf Salah open his bag to reveal a wicker basket full of fruit. All hes had to do is meet him, pick the oranges and exchange a few calls. But with the journey, hes got to learn the ropes, he adds.
The two have just met each other. Yusuf Salah, a solicitor who lives in the Manger Square area with his wife and three children, has come from Asres village, where he grew up with his parents. Before he was born, his parents and his big brother, Karim, lived in the village of Tehiliya, about 15km to the south. They moved back to Manger Square when Yusuf was three. But the relationship between the brothers has not always been easy.
Neither is hard to find. Karims house is next door to the one his brother lives in, and there are black-and-white photos of the two in Salahs time-machine, dating from when they were growing up. The pictures show a teenage Salah alongside a boy who looks no older than 10, and at the back, another boy who could be the same age. But as far as Salah is concerned, they are his brothers Karim and Ali, and he still remembers what they did.
The young Salah hes got in touch with on Facebook tells her hes going to meet Hani at an intersection where he, Karim and Ali are from, in the village of Tehiliya. But as he starts to walk, he seems not to have brought enough water.
Some time later, the men reach a restaurant. Yusuf Salah gazes at the spread of food laid out in front of him, then asks the waiter if he is satisfied. The young man says hes fine, and the two leave.
Its now the start of the long workday for both sides of the family. Yusuf Salah has to travel back to Manger Square to see his family. Hani is headed to visit his parents and friends in Asres, while the Abu Tais reach the village of Tehiliya, where they are due to spend the night.
We see these faces in Masar Ibrahim, a group of 70 as young as 10 and as old as 60, led by the Egyptian-born firebrand Salah, who was born in Amman in 1966 and spent much of his youth living in Cairo. The group’s members, he has been telling me for over an hour, are ordinary citizens like you and me. Salah is on the run from the Egyptian authorities, who imprisoned him in 1985 for participating in a failed attempt to assassinate President Sadat.
Salah settled in the West Bank in 1990. He rose to fame in 1993 by waving a Palestinian flag for the first time in public, a move the Palestinian Authority viewed as an act of defiance after the Israelis seized East Jerusalem’s Old City in the Six-Day War the year before. But like Hani Abu Taih, he was born and raised in Manger Square.
When I met Salah at a friend’s house in northern Bethlehem, the group was preparing for the annual Bethlehem festival. Salah, who is paid an estimated $40,000 by the PA, was dressed in a white t-shirt and khaki pants as he sat at the dining room table, surrounded by his brothers and sisters and other close relatives. He is the eldest of 15 children.
Although there are no local elections in the West Bank, Salah announced his candidacy for the seat he has held since the PA was formed in 1994 as a figurehead representative of the strongman President Yasser Arafat. Like most Palestinians I have met, he is a fierce advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and a fierce opponent of violence. These days, however, his most frequent target is the Israeli military, which he describes as “Zionists” who want to expand Jewish settlement into the West Bank’s southern Hebron district.
