each sentence pair was presented three times per stimulation condition for a total of 162 trials (3 repetitions x 2 stimulation levels). trials were ordered by the number of correct responses, with the maximum number of correct responses for each subject. stimulation levels were +1 and +3 db snr, and trials were randomized.
the resulting data were analyzed for effects of stimulation level by repeated-measures anova with the proportion of correct responses for each stimulation level as the dependent variable. stimulation level and gender of the speaker were the main factors. pre-training scores (day 1) and training with +1 db snr trials were used as baseline controls.
based on correct responses, the system achieved a median success rate of 96%, 91%, 84% and 80% for the +1, +3, +5 and +10 db stimulation levels, respectively. the initial level was the same for all experiments, and all subjects were trained initially with +1 db snr. the system improved over time, with median success rates for +3, +5, and +10 db stimulation levels of 78%, 74%, and 68%, respectively. median improvement over control and +1 db snr were +3 db (97% to 84%) and +3 db (76% to 68%), respectively.
the median stimulus detection rate was 90%. the system can process at least four sentences/min per channel, resulting in a theoretical maximum stimulus rate of 30 sentences/min. stimulations were delivered in less than 30% of valid trials with any snr.
each stimulation condition was repeated three times in each experiment; two hour-long experiments were performed for each subject to obtain the training curves. additional data were collected for some subjects during a fourth, day-long experiment to compare the effects of training over multiple days. this data will be discussed below.
