my sons tooth is cracked on the side and is excruciating to the point of him biting his tongue. i took him to the dentist he took x rays, took a tooth out and said that it is infected so he gave him some antibiotics, i took the antibiotics home and he got sick and started vomiting. could he have a secondary infection? if so what can i do? he is only 15.
hello anne, sorry to hear you are going through this. it is possible that if you have dental pain it is from clenching your teeth. it is very common for people to clench when they have tooth pain, especially if the pain comes and goes. take an ice pack and hold it over your tooth with a towel. as the cold numbs the nerve endings, the pain will diminish. if the cold makes the pain worse, you could use it longer. otherwise, i wouldnt worry about it. do you have a dental appointment on tuesday? that would be a good time to discuss the clenching, it could be causing the pain. good luck. dr. silberman
hello stephanie, sorry to hear you are going through this. are you taking any medication for the infection? if so, the amoxicillin would be fine to take. amoxicillin is very common and is the first line of defense for most dental infections. its not 100%, but if you get a second course of it, you will be less likely to get the infection coming back. for the infection, the cold water should help the pain. when i have a toothache, i take some ice and hold it in my mouth. it makes it much better for a period of time. but you should also try the ice pack method. do not take any pain medication until you see the dentist. talk to them about the clenching too. that should be taken care of in about two weeks. meanwhile, follow the cold pack method. if you feel you need to, see your dentist sooner, but do not stop taking the antibiotic. good luck. dr. silberman
