In the press release announcing the download of the concert, Springsteen mused that fans were attracted to live concert recordings because “they live vicariously through the performers instead of just going to the show. This time around, the band sounds leaner, especially on snarled versions of songs like ‘For You’ and ‘You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)’, which used to have a dancehall vibe. The production features a real rock song presentation, with a major emphasis on guitars and the dual vocal setup of Bruce and Patti in a cohesiveness that is rarely heard in Springsteen’s live recordings. Underneath that sound, there are glints of emotional depth and glimpses of the unique character that punctuate the ‘Born In The USA’ canon. The most welcome change in the production is that Springsteen no longer cranks up the TV Eyes and starlights to the point that the performance loses its intimacy and focus.
Its been some time since I’ve heard that Bruce Springsteen wont be releasing another album, so he said . Its a welcome shift of pace. I assume he’s happy to be dozing in his barn. The end of the tour phase is over. Its time to turn in and wait for the next album, which will hopefully mean a new batch of good music to hear, and some new light to shine on the Springsteen story.
Its like going back in time a little for this one, as for the first time in almost 20 years he is finally at home away from home. The Promised Land is a good old fashioned Greetings from Asbury Park in the tradition of the 1st 2 albums before it, with the simple acoustic guitar and sweet, pained vocals. In the tradition of the last few albums – these days Bruce has a merry band of characters with him, offering a bit of everything. The band is classic Springsteen – saxman Clarence Clemons – huge, powerful, and clearly a big part of the show, and he is joined by “tall” piano man Danny Federici – who also plays organ. Bruce himself is by far the star of the show, pushing like a big rock lizard, sprinting around the stage a few times. Its a rock show, not a concert, with a short set and a few songs to hit, ending with Dancing in the Dark, one of the best songs he’s ever recorded.
Springsteen’s sparse piano chords open the first stanza, Makes you wonder how much is left with some lazy keys strummed. The tall Federici offers a creeping blues before Bruce takes the song on a huge, tear-jerking high, before the gang of friends join in, backing Bruce’s powerful vocal. I need to hear more of this. The tender repetition in the second verse with the way the others join in is a lovely touch. And the guitar and piano join Bruce in the last chorus for one of the best showcases for acoustic guitar and piano since On The Blind Side the album from four years before. Its a reminder of the early days of Springsteen. Its a reminder of what made him a legend, and a reminder of why he’s still remembered through the ages.
