Tkinter Entry Widget Value doesn’t reflect text input

I have a tkinter entry widget with a defined custom format like so:

self.numeric = str(self.variable)
self.value = float(self.numeric)

When setting the self.variable value, I can see the text appear in the entry box (verified with logging) but the value isn’t changing. Also, the value isn’t changing when I programatically click on the Entry widget and use the insert() method to insert the value.
The problem is that I can’t use an Entry widget if it requires a value. I need a clear text edit control. There is also a problem in my code. In the main loop I just call the setNumber
