Why use Photoshop? It is versatile and has a wide range of tools that enable professionals and amateurs alike to edit images in a number of different ways.

Working with the Tools

Mastering Photoshop means becoming familiar with its myriad tools. The tools are versatile, and a range of tutorials and videos on the Internet help you to learn more about them. However, there are certain tools that you will need to know about to work in Photoshop’s advanced editor. The following sections show you how to use the tools for basic image editing.

Basic editing tools

When you first start Photoshop, you can create some basic edits using the image-editing tools. These tools work on layers, and the layers are numbered from one to nine. Let me show you how to create an image that involves basic image editing.

Creating an image

Here is a sample of a digital photograph of the interior of a desk lamp (my own creative work, not so much a photo taken by me). The desk lamp is red, and the matting is black.

1. Create a new document (File⇒New) and make the type layer (Layer⇒New Layer, as shown in Figure 10-1, left).

2. Using the type layer, create a text box in the upper-left portion of the image (Text) and choose a large font from the Font drop-down list (see Figure 10-1, middle).

3. Make sure that you don’t have any guides selected (View) and then press Ctrl+Y (Windows) or +Y (Mac) to unlock the image and put the document into edit mode.

4. In the Layers palette (Windows) or the Layers dialog box (Mac, shown in Figure 10-1, right), delete the layer with the lock symbol next to it (it’s the text layer).

There are two versions of Photoshop Elements, i.e. the pro and the lite version. Both are available for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu platforms.

1. Rotate an image

Rotate image or display the image clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Open the image.

Select the Transform tool.

Point to the top, left or bottom right corner and click on the last point in order to set the final rotation angle.

Move the mouse until the image is aligned to the desired direction.

Once you are done with the rotation, select the layer and press the Delete key to remove the rotation.

2. Crop an image

Cropping is the process of trimming the edges of your images.

Select the Crop tool.

Use the handles to adjust the four corners of the image.

Move the mouse around the image to get a better view of the corners.

Click on the left and right handles in order to choose the top and bottom side of the cropped image.

Click on the upper left corner to crop inwards.

Use the Delete key to remove the cropped area.

3. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and color

Adjust the brightness of your image with different tools.

Open the image.

Select a tool from the tools panel and click on the image.

To change the brightness, use the Brightness slider.

To change the contrast, use the Contrast slider.

To change the colors, use the RGB sliders.

Click on the image again to apply the changes.

4. Apply color effects

Add multiple color effects like brightness, contrast, and more to your image.
