the vitalizer mk-ii works with any analogue source (old and new). the maximum input of the control and lf pots and the control pot is 0.1 v. however, many inputs these days are below 0. this means that you may have to make a number of adjustments, if you were to use the vitalizer mk-ii for mastering.
really, from a practical point of view, one’s style and taste should influence the choice of equipment. i think this is what spl vitalizer does so well. the fact it ticks many boxes and is relatively easy to setup for most of us makes it the obvious choice for a diy or professional.
an example of the spl vitalizer’s gentle subtleties would be an instrument playing a note and then directly after the same note, and slightly higher in pitch, another note playing just the exact same note with a slightly different voice. no changes in dynamics or fullness of tone and still, the interstitial note sounds so perfect, yet the subtle nuance in the timbre, quality and balance of the sound can only be realized on a good recording or the more sophisticated preamps of today. this would be a case where the vitalizer’s gentle approach is ideal.
i was listening to this balinese soundtrack just for fun. the introduction of the vocal, at the 2:30 mark of the video, is a perfect example of how spl vitalizer mk2 t 11 quietly adds warmth. the vocal gives the piece a sense of lightness and increased fullness, while keeping the song in a very pleasant mood.
the secret of the vitalizer is that it is so obvious and eye-catching, that it is probably here to stay, and future improvements will soon be not so significant. the original spl klaviers second-generation spl has barely a different look but allows for so much more than just boosting and harmonics. kontakt-version of the spl vitalizer mk2 is not available yet but has already got a (limited) free demo offer. i would look forward to an update with higher sample rate, more oscillators, and more filter types. the higher sample rate will probably benefit from more efficient fft and dft algorithms. for example with a sample rate of 96khz the original spls fft algorithm should be capable of more than 200khz, which should make a huge difference for the overall resolution of the sound. especially with recordings of strings, which have a well-defined pitch of one audio sample (approximately 440hz or so).
i would recommend the spl vitalizer to every studio that got a klaviere after circa 1980. the digital sound model is every convincing and will make your music sound exactly the way musicians really hear it, it is just a simple mixer in disguise. i think its money well spent.
the spl klaviere, and the vitalizer are classics as far as i know, and they are more than a decade old products. a product like this is enough to endorse its reliability and quality. in spite of the fact that its an effect processor, the spl vitalizer has many other features. the classic emulation bass booster is the most obvious feature. if you are tired of studio wobble and lost bass, the bass booster eliminates all that and delivers a high-tech and professional bass boost.
so, a certain amount of learning is the price for owning such a great sound shaping tool. but what makes spl vitalizer much more appealing is its stunningly good quality sound that shines through the sound enhancer when sound good quality is applied and not abused. the only stuttering problem is the occasional buzzing noise, coming from the external power supply, when the battery was almost out. when making my own demos i use the sound shaping unit in one of its more neutral states, listening to only vinyl.
so, for the price of 5000 euro spl vitalizer mk2 is a very good sound shaping unit that can shape and enhance the sound in creative ways. and because of the high quality of sound its a great equalizer and mastering tool. sound shaping is not a new concept by any means, although due to digital processing hardly realized before. spl vitalizer mk2 is the first sound shaping solution i own that is versatile, easy to use and good sounding to boot. it also sounds better than many more expensive units i own. the sound shaping technique of mixing different frequency curves in a sound control is a great idea and the spl vitalizer mk2 is a winner. i will update this review after the ssl fusion
