Getting acquainted with Photoshop

Here’s a primer on what Photoshop has to offer.

# DO YOU CARE ABOUT LAYERS?

Yes and no. Although Photoshop is a powerful raster-based editing application, it also includes an image editing layer-based system similar to the one that PowerPoint uses. You can use multiple layers to blend, modify, and manipulate color and shading. For example, you can apply a layer mask to mask out portions of the image, and then change the original image layers.

Layers are a powerful tool and are used by professionals in the business world, but many beginning photographers and graphic designers rely on layers for simple image-editing tasks, such as adding some text or a filter to an image. You can easily apply multiple filters or do color tweaking with layers. Photoshop does a very good job of allowing you to organize and save your images in folder and filename folders, depending on what kind of image it is.

This document is intended to be a guide to using Photoshop Elements to edit and craft images.

Learning to edit and craft images in Photoshop Elements

In this guide, we will be working with a simple 8bit grey-scale image called “Rusty”. It is available for download here.

Overview of Photoshop Elements

This tutorial assumes that you have some level of prior knowledge of the computer. Photoshop Elements (as well as the full version of Photoshop) is a graphics editor. It is intended for photographers, graphic designers and web designers to create and modify images. For a beginners’ introduction to the software, see my beginner’s guide to Photoshop Elements.

The user interface

Photoshop Elements is designed around layers. Below you can see the layers in the image. Each layer is a set of changes that may be applied to a photo. For a more detailed guide to layers, see my tutorial on Photoshop elements layers and layers.

Let’s create a new layer above all other layers (the black layer)

Click “Layer” on the Layers panel to bring up the Layers panel. Click the black arrow, above the name of the existing layer to bring up a menu. Select “Create a new layer above all other layers”. The black layer will be created over all layers including the black layer.

Let’s use the “Widening” tool to enlarge the image.

Click on the tool bar to bring up the Tool panel. Click the black arrow for “Widening” and choose “expand” from the drop-down menu. Click and drag to increase the width of the image. The pixel width will increase. Repeat on the height to increase the height of the image.

“Canvas size”

If you choose “Edit canvas size”, you will be able to resize the image at the same time. It is important to be aware of this change as you will need to resize the image when exporting the image.

Q:

What would happen if you mixed evergreen vs deciduous plants?

Suppose you have a garden with an area of Deciduous trees and a small area with an evergreen tree.
What would happen if you add evergreen trees to the deciduous trees in the same garden?
This would be fun to try in an area where evergreens are growing.

A:

Some trees are deciduous. Some trees are evergreen. Some hybridise so that they are a mix.
Some hybridise on purpose, and some hybridise naturally so that they are a mix. You can’t really tell from looking at them but, when you cut them down, you can often find the pithy tissue (the part below the cambium) is not decaying, and that indicates that they haven’t died back, and so they have been hybridising.
I have a chestnut tree that is a 50/50 mix of a good strain (and still growing, with a trunk circumference of nearly 9cm). It is a hybrid of two types of Japanese Chestnut.

So, I expect that when you plant a mix in a landscape, you are going to end up with both leaf types at different times of year, with each species dominating at different times, and growing up very tall or very short, and potentially all over the place.
You could also end up with trees that are pure Deciduous or Pure Evergreen and hybridised right in the centre, so that it looks like a regular landscape of Deciduous and Evergreen trees.
But, with the chestnut example, you can get a tree that is a hybrid so that it is always something in between, at any time of the year.

This is a great site for answers to questions like this. They offer you the opportunity to see what someone has done, and they include a list of plants and their hybrid status. Here are the hybrid trees I have found in my own garden:

Arbutus xalapensis (the Californian Strawberry Tree) is a hybrid between A. japonicus and A. andromedas, and it comes as an evergreen or deciduous tree depending on the conditions in which it is grown.
