Assembling Layers

PhotoShop is a _layer-based_ application that works on the layer system. The layers are organized by folders, and new images can be cut and pasted directly into a folder or dragged from any folder, to any layer, and even to a folder on a different drive.

Adding new layers is simple. You can create a new layer in several ways. The main way is to select the Quick Selection tool, which is on the tools palette, as shown in Figure 5-3. You can also create a new layer by using the Layer New dialog box, as shown in Figure 5-4. You can also create a new layer from an image by pressing CTRL-J (that is, holding the CMD key on the Mac) when the image is selected. The new layer appears highlighted and is surrounded by green if you activate the “Use this layer for its own purpose” box, as shown in Figure 5-5. The layers are now named with the current filename.

Although Photoshop Elements is free, it does have many of the features of the paid version of Photoshop. So, how can we tell whether to recommend Elements? Let’s talk about what Elements can do for you.

Can I use Photoshop Elements to edit images?

Adobe Photoshop Elements can edit images just like the professional version of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements will not let you do anything more than what the professional version will. So, it will not let you remove objects from an image or change the color or contrast of an image or make any other major edits that Photoshop might let you do.

If you want to do these things, you’ll need to use Photoshop or a different tool.

However, Photoshop Elements will let you make minor tweaks to an image such as cropping, straightening, and adjusting the brightness, contrast, and color balance.

If you are using Photoshop Elements to create a graphic, how can you use Elements to edit an image?

Doing so requires a little bit of extra effort but nothing that is not easily done. You can edit images in Elements using a number of different tools.

The most powerful tool in the Elements library is the Magic Wand tool which is the equivalent to the Quick Selection tool in Photoshop. The Magic Wand and Quick Selection tools are the two main tools you’ll use to edit an image in Photoshop Elements.

If you want to see the work of others, you will want to use the Catalog feature.

If you want to add a filter to an image, you will want to use the Adjustments feature.

You can also use the Adjustment Brush (a quick way to change the color of an area or whole image) and the Adjustment Layers feature.

So, you can see that it is really easy to use Photoshop Elements to edit an image. However, you’ll need to do some extra research to learn how.

I don’t want to learn Photoshop Elements. Can I use Photoshop Elements?

Yes, you can use Photoshop Elements if you want. However, it will not be as powerful as Photoshop. Elements is designed as a viewer/editor, but you can not use all the features of Photoshop. You can use only the tools that Elements has.

It will be a lot easier to use your image in Photoshop than in Photoshop Elements.

Can I use a copy of Elements with a paid version of Photoshop?

1. If you haven’t already opened Photoshop from the DVD, do so now by starting Photoshop from the Windows Start button…

First, you will need to load the Adobe Photoshop program (Figure 2-3). If you’ve previously installed Photoshop on your PC, Photoshop will be installed on your PC.

2. After you open Photoshop, your first task will be to save the image. Choose File⇒Save. Choose a name for the image and a location on your PC. (See Chapter 1 for instructions on saving and creating files in Windows). You can use the file-naming techniques explained in Chapter 1 to help you organize your images. Figure 2-4 shows an example of a simple organization of images.

3. Photoshop opens your new image in the Canvas window (see Figure 2-5).

To continue your first steps, you will need to import an image, a feature that allows you to load a new image into the program. When you import an image, Photoshop loads the image into the Canvas window so that you can work with it. Any layers or selections you created in the imported image will remain on the original image. For more information on using the Import feature, see the later section “Importing images.”

Photoshop has lots of features, including several tools that you can use to work with images. The majority of these tools involve the use of brushes or pen tools to perform various functions. The remainder of this chapter covers some of the most common tools you’ll need to work with to complete your imaging projects.

You may need to experiment with your tool options on the menu bar that’s visible in Figure 2-6. The tools are divided into two sections: the main menu bar on the left side of the window (Tools and Drawing) and the menu bar on the right side (Filter and Effects). The latter offers more specialized tools, while the former offers standard tools. Figure 2-7 shows these two sections of the menu bar.
