in this paper we describe a linguistic research group (lrg) funded project which is collecting data for a dictionary of colloquial english. our main interests are lexis and grammar, and we are trying to identify ‘categories’ of colloquial english words based on the characteristics of their structure and their usage patterns. in particular, we are interested in simple sentences involving verbs and nouns, since this is a relatively unexplored area of english structure and we know that the colloquial forms of such verbs (and nouns) are associated with’short’ forms of the lexemes to which they belong. it is also a rich area from which we can extract a fairly basic set of lexico-semantic categories. the main products of the project are definitions for use in electronic dictionaries, and a further product may be a dictionary of colloquial english words, together with annotated versions of nlp corpora of dialogues and stories involving the words, with a view to developing computational methods for the parsing, analysis and recognition of colloquial english from brief descriptions of situations and from transcripts of conversational dialogue. the project is aimed at producing data for use in a forthcoming electronic dictionary project.
