Ok now it’s time to actually install. Insert the Leopard disk into your Mac and boot into Mac OS X ‘Install Mac OS X 10.5.2’, make sure to select the keyboard and ‘T’ without an ‘E’ boot and when the Leopard splash screen appears, press ‘D’ to make your Mac choose the second or third option, make sure to select Leopard 10.5.2; select partitioning then partition with GPT, then change the volume name and drive name to Leopard 10.5.2, set the mount point to ‘/’ set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click on ‘Install’.
You will be asked where to install, select your partition for Leopard and click on Continue… then select Install to use the DVD. When the Leopard install disk has been successfully installed it will finish the install process, once you have completed the install process you should reboot your Mac (your Mac will need to connect to a network to get updates.) once you have rebooted in to Mac OS X it is time to install Leopard with the chameleon installer. Insert the Leopard disk (remember to use the bootdisk not the install disk) and boot in to ‘Install Mac OS X 10.5.2’, when the ‘Macintosh HD’ appears press ‘Q’ to make Leopard choose the second or third option, then select install to use the DVD and click on ‘Install’. Once the Leopard install disk is successfully installed it will finish the install process and you should reboot your Mac then you will need to reinstall your bootloader (all this has been covered in earlier posts so for now I’ll just copy and paste): insert the Live DVD with. Leopard 10.5.2; press ‘F10’ on your keyboard to boot into Mac OS X, you will be presented with the Welcome screen, on the left hand side select the ‘Utilities’ option, select ‘Terminal’ from the list then log in as the usual user (‘root’) then type this in: sudo rm -rf /var/db/tftpboot/boot123/; sudo osascript -e ‘tell app “System Events” to set current application preferences to {loadLocalServer “boot123.iso”};’ (this will load the Boot123.iso which you’ve already downloaded into the boot directory at the tftp server location.) (after you press ‘Enter’ on the last line a progress bar may appear, if so press ‘C’ to cancel the command.) if you now reboot you will see the Boot123.iso as the tftp server and bootloader and the rest of the install process can be completed. you will then be presented with the Welcome to Mac OS X screen.
Important note: Leopard 10.5.2 has a bug in the installer which is ‘Auto Disk Refresh’ this is a feature which will install all the updates available on the internet so you should disable it.
Well – once you have finished downloading the tiger.tgz file you will need to extract it to your Desktop… Once you do that you will have a folder on your desktop name ‘MacOSX10.5.2 with Tiger’. In this folder is the bootloader needed. To run BootCDs just launch it from your desktop, it will ask you for a DVD or CD. If you are using a DVD launch BootDVD.iso. If you are using a CD launch BootCD.iso. Okay, now launch BootCD.iso and follow the instructions on the screen. When the screen says ‘Boot from the Leopard 10.5.2 disk and press f12 at startup to enter Boot Options.’ Press the ‘f’ key. Now in the next screen press the ‘Delete’ key and make a note of the partition. Then click the ‘OK’ button and continue. That’s it! Your now booting off of the Leopard install DVD and loading the Leopard installer to complete the remainder of the install. If you wish to check the install disk go to software update and reinstall if you have any missing drivers or if you wish to update from Tiger to Leopard. It has Leopard for both Power PC and Intel based machines so there will be no issues with graphics or sound. I will also update the installer to include bootloaders for your machine. Once you have Leopard installed you will have to partition the drive and install your drivers. Please note this will void your warranty if you do not purchase Leopard from the Apple Store.
