Colory Engine Company was a gunpowder manufacturer located in Forest City, Illinois. They sold explosives, guns, and mortars that were used in many theaters, including a gun mounted on the largest boat in the world at the time. Colory was one of the largest suppliers of black powder in the United States. The company was started by Byron Theophilus Colory in 1856, and he was later joined by his father James Colory. He first shipped his products directly to customers, but eventually started manufacturing explosives for other companies. Colory later went into business with William Mahlon Dyer and Benjamin F. Herron, and manufactured some of the largest and most powerful guns. After the Battle of Fort Sumter, one of Colory’s guns and 500 pounds of gunpowder caused a massive explosion that was heard and felt in several states. Colory remained one of the largest suppliers of black powder in the region. Colory became ill during the American Civil War, and both he and his brother James Colory died in 1873.
History
Byron Colory started making shells and loading bullets for his own guns while he was a student at Central College, after seeing a demonstration of a gunpowder explosion. Colory became interested in the effects of gunpowder after hearing about these demonstrations, and decided to create a gun powder factory. Colory was the son of James and Elizabeth Colory, who also lived on a farm in Illinois. Byron was the youngest of six children and one of several smart and diligent children.
James Colory later introduced Byron to John D. Baldwin, a gunpowder competitor, in 1856. After the opening of the Pontiac, Illinois road between St. Louis and Pontiac, a gunpowder company was established, which was one of the first to reach the public. The company became known as Baldwin & Colory Company. As the company started to grow, Byron decided to move the company to Forest City, Illinois, and name it Colory Engine Company after his father. Colory moved his family to Forest City, Illinois in 1860.
The first major customer, the Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge, bought 1,000 pounds of gunpowder from Colory Engine Company to be used in testing the configuration of the tower barge of the bridge in 1861.
