make sure the usb stick has enough free space that is about 2 gb for the root partition. if not, then you will have to change the settings of the boot partition. one thing you can do is create a partition of 2 gb in the boot partition and create another partition for the rest of the space using the fdisk tool. you can also resize an existing partition; for information on how to do that, see how to resize a linux partition. remember to change the settings for the boot partition in the bios before trying the flash drive again.

to write the size of the root partition of the flash drive, go to the fdisk tool and type p for the partition command. the location for the root partition can be found by pressing l, then typing the letter of the partition in the dropdown box. the output will be something like the following:

partition number (1-6, default 1): 2 first cylinder (1-17907, default 1): 1 last cylinder or +size or +sizem or +sizek (1-17907, default 17907): 17907 

the current size of the root partition is 1.9 gb. to create the boot partition, type n and press enter to move to the next line. then press p (for partition). type 1 and press enter to select the boot partition. press n and press enter to create the boot partition. press w (for write) and press enter to write the changes to disk. the boot partition should now be created.

the fnetutil is a windows xp and windows 7 utility that can reformat a usb flash drive, in a number of different file systems, without wiping the drive. the work just as well for a number of other operating systems if they can mount a fat32 formatted volume. while formatted drives will allow all of your standard files tools to be used, there are various interesting applications that you can install and use on a file system such as fat32.
the fnetutil’s primary display is in a dialog with two selection boxes and an entry field. it lists the drives, a summary of the data on the selected drive, and gives you the ability to choose a reformatting action. the dialog has a “help” button, a “cancel” button to abort, and a “finish” button to go ahead with the reformatting. this dialog also has a list of the commands available and a “device”, “format”, “tools”, “unmount” and “ok” buttons.
before you start your reformatting operation, you need to select a target drive. as the application runs, it will ask you if you’re finished. if you selected a floppy volume as the drive, the fnetutil will prompt you to insert the floppy into your computer’s floppy drive. a usb flash drive inserted into a usb port will be listed as a volume just like an internal hard drive. the application automatically formats the drive if it’s selected, and it gives you the ability to create a bootable media, if desired. you can also view a detailed listing of the volume’s data, such as the partition table and file system, to make sure you’ve selected the correct target drive. when finished, it will give you the ability to delete the reformatted volume.
