Why does mongodb not use a journal in sharded cluster?

I was wondering why MongoDB does not have a journal to protect against the loss of a replica-set node. Is there any particular reason for that? I know that in larger (more than 10 nodes) clusters where a journal can be discarded because of the fact that the same node is being restored on a different host, I can see why journals would be useless for writes. But in the case of a single node, why would one want to waste disk space on a journal when a replica-set node is perfectly capable of dealing with failed nodes?

A:

The master node is the primary driver of your shard. In a cluster that uses journaling, you would want your primary to potentially lose one of its secondaries and still keep going. This way, you can detect a bad secondary node and remove it without losing your data.
While that may seem a bit redundant, I can’t think of a single instance where this would be a necessity. I’m not a huge fan of journaling so I just have my primaries write into mongod’s journal (default) and then I perform the recovery.

I would guess that an LSM (Log Storage Manager) is another project of theirs, probably with a journal. There isn’t a need to keep the data on the journal, because write operations are now delayed (L2ARC, on by default in the latest releases).
There are two different components of a sharded cluster that I’m aware of:

the sharded portion
the Replica set portion
