While the hype around this title continues, it is unfortunate that a full, representative review of this title is still somewhat elusive. In recent years Square Enix has largely abandoned its RPG series (with some exceptions). There have been two entries in the Final Fantasy series, a DS RPG, the very rare Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, one spin-off (i.e. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) and a few smaller titles. The new console iteration of Final Fantasy finally brought back Final Fantasy Tactics, but Square Enix is working on a completely new title, and it is unlikely that it will hold up to this year’s release. It is however, a title that I am eager to see for myself.

What makes Final Fantasy Tactics interesting is its genre. The game features a unique combination of turn-based gameplay, with the player issuing commands to his or her characters based on real-time movement of the characters. This is in a fantasy setting that has been somewhat touched upon before by Square Enix with Chrono Trigger. Prior attempts have been mixed. The original Final Fantasy Tactics was a beautiful title, with a unique style that made the game stand out, but the game struggled from the start.

Final Fantasy: The World of Final Fantasy, was quite a departure for Square Enix, as well as the Final Fantasy series as a whole. The game is set in a world in which magic has been used to affect time. In an attempt to save the world, the world’s heroes gather to form a team. A unique setting that may be a bit difficult to get into as it can be a bit heavy on the world building. It is a setting that brings to mind the Lost Alpha timeline from the Final Fantasy 7 remake. In an attempt to save the world, the heroes gather and create a team to defeat the enemy. Fantasy is definitely a unique setting, and the question is whether or not it will fit into the Final Fantasy series. It is a stylistic departure, but its biggest challenge will be whether or not its simplistic RPG gameplay will be enough to keep the fans who are used to the series.
