Removing a skin from a gameobject by script

So I have been searching for ages for a way to remove a skin. I have an object with a mesh renderer and a mesh collider, I want to remove the skin and use the remaining mesh collider on the object to detect collisions.
I can achieve this by setting the material to a null material, but I also need to be able to use the mesh collider.
I have been attempting to do this by writing a script:
