The DVD is the same, but the release of the DVDs without extras is a shame. If youre a fan of Japanese movies like this, be prepared to fork out $5 at least for a decent enough blu-ray. So, two elements of contention here are firstly, how much of a premium should be put into a film like this? And secondly, are people willing to shell out that much? Normally, I would say no, and I wouldnt want to, because a film as nice as this one is not made for people to throw $80 at it. It comes from a genre that was aimed for the little guy, not the big screen. So, I am doing a little market research here, and I am going to ask you, should you spend $80 on this film? I see some people on Amazon have been asking about it recently, and you can tell by the reviews its been selling for around $90-100.
The DVD also comes with a collection of photobooks. The first one, Kimi no Na wa. ( Your Name ), features a foreword and three photographs. The foreword is provided by Tachibana Taki, and the first photo is a pretty standard one; the other two are of Kamiki Ryunosuke and Mitsuha Mone.
The entire ride, including the bonanza final shot, belongs to the director, Makoto Shinkai. Your Name is his first foray into drama, and he clearly established himself as the top-tier animator that he is with this footage. A real welcome change from his previous works, where he was known for artistic versions of genre or slice of life stories. (And yes, I know that he also directed a cute slice of life anime, too.) Shinkai applied a more emotional, sophisticated approach to the animation, while not reducing its quality (which are completely necessary). And while animation fans will grasp the core of this film immediately, the combination of seriously high-stakes storytelling and appealingly realistic animation makes a memorable one.
