What you need to use this book
To use Photoshop successfully, you must have a computer capable of running it (and the more powerful the better). This book relies on you having access to the latest version of Adobe Photoshop, which you can download from the company’s Web site at `www.adobe.com`.
Most current digital photographs are saved in a TIFF format, so a minimum of 512 megabytes (MB) of memory is required to use Photoshop. Other image formats require a smaller amount of memory, but some non-TIFF formats are not compatible with the file-conversion and adjustments processes in Photoshop. For memory and speed, I always recommend working with the largest image size possible. I’ve included enough sample images for you to work with, but I don’t have enough space for more.
You also need a Microsoft or Apple operating system, such as Windows XP, Vista, and OS X (Mac OS X). Of course, you also need access to Adobe Photoshop in whatever form you have purchased it.
Speaking of the latter, the following chapters use Photoshop CS4 as a basis for their examples.
Because Photoshop CS4 is released on a regular basis, some of the tools are slightly different from the ones in earlier

Here’s a list of Photoshop Elements features with steps to follow to use these features.
Usage: This tutorial is for anyone who uses Photoshop Elements and would like to edit images that were created in Photoshop Elements.
The following steps only include the essential features of Photoshop Elements, or any other image editor.
Step 1: Open an image in Photoshop Elements.
Step 2: Create a new adjustment layer.
Step 3: Add adjustment layers to the image.
Step 4: Select the appropriate adjustment layer.
Step 5: Draw a marquee around the section of your image you wish to edit.
Step 6: Apply the desired effect to the marquee.
Step 7: Adjust and edit the existing effects using the adjustment layer in the Photoshop Elements adjustment layer dialog box.
Step 8: Continue this process for the rest of the image layers.
Step 9: Save and close the image.
Why Create a New Adjustment Layer?
The Adjustment layers are one of the most powerful features of Photoshop Elements. In fact, they can do a lot more than just create a ton of new adjustment layers. They can be used to edit an entire image at once.
Adjustment layers are created by clicking on the Add a Layer icon on the top of the Layers palette (when the Layers palette is open).
A new empty adjustment layer is created.
Note: To make this tutorial easier to follow, I am going to make an assumption that you have opened a photo in Photoshop Elements. For a specific step-by-step tutorial on how to open an image in Photoshop Elements, check out the tutorial here.
Step 2: Create a New Adjustment Layer
The Adjustment layers are displayed in a different palette, called the Adjustment Layers, when an image is opened in Photoshop Elements.

To access the Adjustment Layers, go to the Layers palette (or just click on the tab at the top of the Layers palette). From here, a new layer is created by clicking on the Add a Layer icon (as explained in step 1). This new layer is an adjustment layer. To access the settings for this layer, go to the Adjustment Layers palette, which you can see on the left of the following image.
