The consequences of excessive alcohol use are devastating, and recidivism remains the largest challenge for most treatment programs. Although there is strong evidence that community reinforcement treatment (CBT) is an effective treatment for alcohol use disorders, there is little empirical evidence that it decreases drug use outcomes. Yet many patients relapse to drug use while in treatment, thereby underscoring the need for treatment that targets both drugs and alcohol. Motivational Interviewing (MI) has proven to be efficacious in reducing drinking and drug use, and has been incorporated into several behavioral interventions, including CBT. However, the evidence from systematic reviews has been mixed as to whether or not MI improves retention in treatment. There is much room for improvement in the integration of MI with CBT and other evidence-based addiction treatments. The primary aim of this application is to compare the efficacy of a mindfulness intervention plus the usual CBT for reducing drug use outcomes in addition to increasing retention in treatment. Mindfulness is a cognitive focus on the present moment that is a key component of many psychological interventions. However, it has not been incorporated into CBT in the context of addiction. The proposed study integrates mindfulness training, which is an established component of individual therapies for substance use problems, into CBT, which has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of alcohol and other drug use disorders. The mindfulness training in the proposed study will consist of a brief 8-week course designed to teach participants how to apply mindfulness to behavioral change. This
