Here is a brief walkthrough of the Toon Boom Animate Pro toolset for Illustrator. Working in Adobe Photoshop can sometimes be tricky. Using animated layers in Photoshop can be complicated. Often it is quicker to move layers around in the Flash timeline. There is no Flash timeline in Adobe Photoshop. Toon Boom Animate Pro enables you to do this. First you’ll need to enable shape animation. This is done by putting a multi-plane symbol on the stage. The way this works is by the multi-plane symbol being a proxy for a camera. To see what this is, open the timeline and place a camera on stage. Then click on the multi-plane and select shape animation from the shortcut menu. The multi-plane will then show the in and out points of your camera, much as if you were placing a key frame on the camera. Now create an animated background. This can be accomplished by placing an image on the stage using the shape animation symbol. Now here’s the tricky part. If we double click the symbol on stage the image will disappear. Select the portion of the image you wish to animate. Now with the image selected, hold down Ctrl+D. The image should now reappear on stage. Hold Ctrl+Delete to remove it again. Now use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+K. This will “capture” the frame on stage. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+G to enter’shape animation tools’, click on the’manage capture’ icon. At this point, you’ll need to have at least two key frames. You should probably have one in portrait and one in landscape. That way if you rotate the canvas, your image will stay upright. Now with all the key frames selected, drag the portrait key frame to the other key frame. It should look like this: Now let’s animate. With all the layers selected press Ctrl+K. You’ll see an image of your key frame appear on stage. Now select “shape animation tools” from the shortcut menu, select “shape animation settings” and drag the portrait key frame to the stage, so it is above the portrait key frame. Any changes you make will happen on stage. It may take a few attempts to get it right. Click on the red arrow near the add layer button and move the position of the new layer. Once happy with the position you can hide the layer by clicking on it and pressing the spacebar.
