My Ph.D. dissertation examines the recently discovered phenomenon of “overreaching meanings,” or meanings that are intentionally overstated or manipulated. In a similar vein, “underreaching meanings” can be described as the extent to which a band’s lyrics become an accurate reflection of the actual situation faced by the band. In other words, “underreaching” is the opposite of “overreaching.” Is it possible for an album cover to tell a lie? This is what I am trying to answer, and a large part of my work focuses on the critical aspects of album covers as a window into the motivations and culture of the band.
