the last few years had been rough. while curly was still recovering from the infamous stroke in 1947, the stooges were being phased out of their familiar roles in films. there were a few forays into television through the 1940s as a team, but ultimately they would only make one final official appearance as a unit: they reprise their roles as the three stooges in columbia pictures production rocky road (1948). but both larry and curly suffered lingering injuries from the stroke, and by 1948 that too had caught up with shemp.
numerous shorts continued to be released through 1948 and 1949 as the stooges re-entered film theaters, but lawrence and curly remained severely diminished and shemp, now a gibbering shell of himself, had played his last in the shorts.
after eight years and seven films in the roles, and after a dozen years in which they were an integral part of the public persona of columbia pictures, the stooges walked off the columbia lot on march 8, 1948.
by this point, the stooges were probably made more than they ever had been before. the amount of money made by the stooges, and thereby columbia pictures, during these years has never been calculated. one might argue it is comparable to what lawrence would ultimately make after his retirement. what is clear, however, is that the stooges helped, in the words of larry, ’emphasize that a bigger picture meant greater opportunity for their features
moe’s girls was released in 1947 and was curly’s last film with the stooges. billy lewis was borrowed from columbia to play their next film the three musketeers, and curly was ready to retire. when larry and curly became depressed that it may have been the end of the line for the three stooges, the studio hoped the gang would be able to one day make it back to the big screen, and they offered the role of the fourth stooge to shemp who was still in rehab.
once in the 1950’s, schlesinger bought the rights to “the hawk’s” for a whopping $20,000. schlesinger had a knack for producing schlock and the hawk (three of which were made) is certainly not an exception. frank sinatra plays a minor role with his three bank robbers. it did produce the classiest one-sheet for the film.
once in the 1960’s, schlesinger produced two spike jones musical-style shorts, but that was to be the last of the team’s accomplishments in this area. by 1964, schlesinger sold the team and the rights to columbia pictures.
the series continued on under columbia and moved to the west coast, where the low-budget nature of the films could be mended. for the first 10 years after the transfer to columbia, the team would shoot their films in technicolor, and the films would be more similar to the team’s earlier ventures. however, they would use a close-up style of the actors and would have no black-and-white versions of their films. two changes were made in the film’s animation, however. first, the characters and the settings were expanded to allow for more interaction between the characters. second, the team became entirely responsible for the animation. howard would work on the animation as well as the screenplay, and the team would explain all of the slang and jokes that would be used in their films. it was a large step for the team because they did not typically take much creative license.
