here is what i dont understand though. how was this project greenlit for a suicide squad movie? its a pretty bad concept. i cant imagine any of the dc folks that make up the joker project allowing this through. suicide squad is basically just a regular movie, just with an r rating and with an emphasis on more comic book movies. now, the movie wasnt bad, but it wasnt good either. suicide squad is one of those characters that is basically a copy-and-paste of batman and robin and its an insult to those characters.
this is like batman & robin, but half the characters are horribly over-the-top and it doesnt really gel with the rest of the dc movies. before suicide squad, there was a direct sequel to batman vs. superman. unfortunately, the second batman and superman movie is being made by another director, todd phillips (who has a strong pg13 rating) and the joker is being played by joaquin phoenix who is making his first post-scream movie.
and yet, its suicide squad, for no reason whatsoever. no creative benefit. you could make a great suicide squad movie with the joker, harley, el diablo, deadshot, penguin, etc. you could make it look great with these characters. the only reason to make this suicide squad movie is to cash in on the character and prevent the joker project from getting its movie.
however, gunn isnt one to use the same collaborator twice. after working with fincher on the social network, he went to work with john murphy on guardians of the galaxy 2 in 2018. and for suicide squad, he brought in trent reznor for the score. the resulting sound gives the film a menacing and visceral feeling reminiscent of first-person shooters like doom and quake. and like all james gunn movies, theres a lot of over the top music and noise. its mostly hard rock and metal, and it definitely makes suicide squad feel a little more like an action movie, not a superhero one. trent reznor is an excellent songwriter, and that funk-infused energy that he added to for indicud as well as his electronic score for the girl in the spiderweb was truly inspirational. his work on tim burton s beetlejuice is the best example of reznor’s musical talents and he was the perfect choice to make a gritty, modern score for a film like suicide squad.
