Defense attorneys for Armani Jackson, 25, have requested to start the trial at 9 a.m. instead of 5 p.m.

Jackson is charged with first-degree murder, a crime punishable by life in prison or life without parole for one who commits it with malice and deliberately.

Jackson is accused of first-degree murder in the May 5, 2012, stabbing death of Aniesha Chambers. Jackson and Chambers were former high school classmates, and Jackson was friends with Chambers’ older brother.

Chambers’ death prompted a $15 million federal lawsuit against the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, prosecutors and others.

Jackson’s lawyers have claimed he was not criminally responsible for Chambers’ death in the weeks that followed the stabbing at the Oxford Suites in Auburn Township. They contend he was upset over her decision to end their relationship and go to college.

Jackson’s attorneys have called 24 witnesses, including Jackson’s mother, stepmother and girlfriend, to support their claim Jackson should be found not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder.

Jackson is not charged with second-degree murder, a crime that typically carries a prison sentence of four to 15 years.

Jackson’s attorneys are expected to call their fourth expert witness Monday.
