The film was produced on a budget of 200 million, with the film being mainly shot in Romania. The film had its official release in India on 28 September 2013, and was shown in Bollywood and other Indian film festivals across the globe. Shah stated in an interview that the film was “easily the best film that I have made so far”, with cinematographer Siddharth Roy Kapur in an interview stating that “It (Kaal) was such a good experience for everyone on the film. It was an extremely difficult film to shoot and our schedules were extremely hectic and we were very pressed for time”.
The film was distributed by Reliance Entertainment, and also had a Tamil dubbing version titled Kal, released on 14 October 2013. The film starred Sivakarthikeyan as the lead character, alongside Ajay Devgn, Vijay Sethupathi, Sonali Bendre and Priyanka Bose. Kaal was directed by Siddharth Shah, who makes his debut in Bollywood, while Rajkumar Bhattacharjea wrote the story. Varma made his return to direction after 16 years after Darling Darling (2001).
Background
Shah had shot the “world’s longest elevator” for Ajay Devgn’s last film, I Hate Luv Storys, and expressed interest to work on a project with two leads. Shah later stated that he drew inspiration from the journeys he had taken earlier to develop the film. During the development stage, prior to the pre-production, Shah consulted on the script with Rajkumar Bhattacharjee, who had previously assisted upon Shah’s last venture, Darling Darling (2001). The film was largely shot in Bisti, Romania, in locations such as the ruins of an old crusader castle as well as the river bank of the river Nistru.
Kaal was produced on a budget of 200 million, with the film being primarily shot in Romania and in Aligarh, India. The film cost the most to complete, with Shah estimating it to be over his budget. Although the budget was initially 800 million, it was eventually reduced to 200 million. The film was mainly shot in winter and was released during the summer season in India.
