Think of the Tools panel as a kind of black box where you work, and the rest of Photoshop is the UI. There are tools in the Tools panel for choosing a color, adding a new tool (a gradient, splatter, or pre-built stencil), duplicating the tool, and applying it to the image. As you click on a tool in the panel, it appears in the image the way it’s supposed to. Your work area is the area of the image just before anything (the layer, selection, or mask) is applied.
Photoshop offers a number of useful features for working with bitmapped images. You can adjust image brightness, and you can also adjust white balance and exposure. The image histogram, color and brightness sliders, and the Cure filter are all useful tools even if you don’t worry about building an accurate image. You can also use them to balance the way colors look in the image in the Creative suite.
This is where the line between Lightroom and Photoshop gets a bit blurred. Those that use only one Adobe application on a regular basis might be wondering if they need to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 (or 2017) due to the new features that are currently only available in Lightroom 6. However, most of the features being added to Photoshop are minor and most photographers or editors who have upgraded from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom 6 have found that they don’t use many of the added features. In fact, most of the features in Lightroom 6 are just in time (i.e. final) updates to features that have existed on Lightroom for years.
