1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a semiconductor device having a circuit equipped with thin film transistors (hereinafter referred to as TFTs) and to a method of manufacturing the semiconductor device. The semiconductor device of the present invention is used in liquid crystal displays and EL (Electro Luminescence) displays.
2. Description of the Related Art
Thin film transistors (hereinafter referred to as TFTs) which are formed on glass substrates or plastic substrates are used in liquid crystal displays and EL displays. A TFT requires a channel forming region between a source region and a drain region of the TFT, and a region where current between the source region and the drain region flows between the channel forming region and the source region. The channel forming region and the region where current flows are called the channel region and the source region or drain region, respectively. The source region and the drain region are formed as parts of an electrode which is formed on the substrate.
The substrate on which the TFT is formed will be explained. FIG. 1 is a sectional view of an example of the substrate on which the TFT is formed. In FIG. 1, the substrate on which the TFT is formed includes an insulating substrate 101, a gate electrode 102 formed on the insulating substrate 101, an interlayer insulating film 103 on the gate electrode 102, a semiconductor layer 104 on the interlayer insulating film 103, a source electrode 105, and a drain electrode 106. The gate electrode 102 is composed of a metal such as Al or Al alloy, and the semiconductor layer 104 is composed of a silicon layer or a silicon semiconductor such as polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) or microcrystalline silicon. The source electrode 105 is composed of a metal such as Al or Al alloy, and the drain electrode 106 is composed of a metal such as Al, Cr, Ta, Mo, or a silicide of any of the metals.
There are many cases where the TFT used in a liquid crystal display or the like is formed on a substrate such as a glass substrate or a quartz substrate. These substrates are expensive, and their production cost is very high, so that the use of such a substrate is undesirable. On the other hand, a plastic substrate such as a plastic film is cheap, but it is inferior to the glass substrate or the quartz substrate in heat resistance and solvent resistance. This invention relates generally to small electric motor or power tool drives in which a small electric motor is operated by a reduction gear. A compact, high power motor is required for drive of the small, pencil-point electric motor of a variety of power tools used for shaping and forming materials such as wood, metal, plastic, etc. into usable articles. The tool is often used to shape or form a work piece of hard material such as metal, plastic or wood. Examples of such power tool applications are rotary drawers, lathes, tables, punches, screwdrivers and the like.
Small, compact electric motor or power tools and drives are known. U.S. Pat. No. 4,795,428 discloses a small electric motor drive for a small electric motor. A reduction gear, which is of the worm wheel and slot ring type, is connected to a small electric motor having an armature shaft extending generally at right angles to the axis of the motor. The reduction gear has an output shaft extending in a direction generally at right angles to the armature shaft. A variable speed pulley is connected to the reduction gear output shaft, and a motor belt drivingly connects the reduction gear to the pulley. The pulley is moved axially along the output shaft of the reduction gear by a spring biased axially movable rod. The rod has one end connected to a handle and the other end connected to the pulley.
The motor and reduction gear of U.S. Pat. No. 4,795,428 are not optimally compact in that the motor is at right angles to the output shaft of the reduction gear. This arrangement requires more space for the arrangement to be practical. Further, the arrangement requires that the motor motor be at right angles to the axis of the output shaft of the reduction gear. This arrangement causes the motor and its drive train to be at a non-optimum location for packaging the motor.
The motor and reduction gear of U.S. Pat. No. 4,795,428 also are not optimally balanced. The arrangement is not practical as the reduction gear is under significant load during operation. Further, the reduction gear is not optimally balanced so that it requires more space to operate in packaging.
A further disadvantage of the motor and reduction gear of U.S. Pat. No. 4,795,428 is that it is not easily serviceable. The motor is located at right angles to the output shaft and drive axis of the reduction gear and therefore is
