while both dragon quest iv and v followed a formula established in the original nes games, they both tried a few new things. dragon quest v brought a top-down view to the series, which was a bit disappointing for many fans who had grown used to the old-school perspective. the game also added a somewhat obligatory side-quest mechanism, which was something of a fad for late-90s and early 2000s rpgs, and even survived into the present day. it was a mechanic that felt a little more like final fantasy vii than dragon quest, since it felt like a piece of your party should be able to do something besides just get stronger, and it seemed out of place in a traditional rpg. the music was also significantly less upbeat than in previous games, and some of the tracks felt like they were ripping off final fantasy vi for a cheap laugh.
it was a few years later that square enix finally released dragon quest vi, and by this time, i couldnt have cared less about the traditional rpg mechanics. i had played nearly every dragon quest game released in japan by that point, and i was just glad to have a chance to play a quality role-playing game that didnt feel like it was trying to cram its ideas into the games of a different time. i would feel the same way about dragon quest vi, even though it havent aged all that well. the huge success of the japanese role-playing game as a whole after the turn of the century had left a huge mark, and square enix seemed to take the genre and run with it.
while i enjoyed the game, i realized that the game probably had a lot to offer to someone who wasnt familiar with the series, or the genre in general. i like to think that dragon quest vi was something of a laboratory experiment, one that was trying to find out what a game with no barriers to entry could be. the english release of the game included the option to turn on the old-school text-based menu system, which was a nice little touch that i doubt was necessary. the touchscreen controls were also included, and although they were essentially functional and didnt break the game, they certainly did feel a bit dated by the time square enix released the ps2 remake in 2002.
