Some express their conviction that they are in a position to ensure that something good happens to them, or that they can ensure that some way or means will be put in place to benefit them, and that there is a spiritual or natural possibility of success. There is more than this, however, especially if it is applied to others, because the sinner who prays for the sinner is more than happy to see him or her restored and freed from evil. This is what has been and is being done for the sinners by the faithful in the Church, and it is what we are doing for others, their loved ones, and even ourselves by interceding for them. The faithful intercede for people who are dear to them as they believe that there is a possibility for them to be restored. This is especially manifest in the case of the young and the elderly. In the Old Testament, the young and the elderly are usually in need of God’s mercy and patience. This is especially true in the case of the young when they are in difficult situations or when they are, in some way, distant from God, and they need to have faith in God’s mercy. And it is much more necessary in the case of the elderly, for they have less means of working on a personal level. However, the elderly, who may have given up hope of being blessed, are being loved in the Lord’s Prayer. He does not forget to pray for those who were persecutors of the faith. He prays for them that they may have mercy on them. When he petitions for their conversion, he gets a favourable answer, and this is indeed an important cause of joy. Mordecai was not just a faithful servant of the king. He was a faithful servant of God.
