“Here, the court cannot possibly know how many parents are entitled to the relief this Court is ordering. Moreover, the Government only recently has identified all of the parents present in the United States who were not fingerprinted by the inadmissible border crossers, and may well be unable to locate them,” U.S. District Judge Dana M. Sabraw wrote. “In short, the Government has failed to provide any assurance to this court that all children have been accounted for and that they are now in the custody of family members or sponsors.”

Just hours after the ruling, the Department of Homeland Security said it would be attempting to reunify the separated families by Thursday morning.

“It is our priority to reunite as many children with their families as safely and quickly as possible,” Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. “As we’ve said from the beginning, we will work to reunite the families that were separated inadvertently, and that is what we intend to do.”
